Google still has the traffic, but a growing share of professional researchers, journalists and developers now default to an AI answer engine. We tested Perplexity Pro, You.com and Arc Search across 300 real queries — current events, technical documentation, shopping research and academic citations — to find out which AI search is worth making your homepage in 2026.

What "AI search" actually means in 2026

AI search engines generate a written answer with inline citations, not a list of blue links. They handle follow-up questions in conversation, summarize sources, and increasingly take actions on your behalf — booking, buying, drafting. The best ones now match Google for freshness and beat it for synthesis.

Perplexity Pro: the gold standard

Perplexity remains the most polished AI search. The Pro tier ($20/month) lets you choose between GPT-5, Claude 4 and Sonar (their fine-tuned in-house model). Sources are cited inline, Pro Search runs multi-step research, and "Spaces" let you collect threads into shareable research projects.

  • Best for: research, journalism, due diligence, technical questions.
  • Weakness: occasionally over-summarises and loses nuance.

You.com: the customizable workhorse

You.com is the most flexible. You can switch between 20+ models, pin your favourite sources, and the new "Agents" feature builds repeatable workflows (e.g. "every morning, summarise overnight AI news from these 12 sites"). Pricing starts at $15/month.

Arc Search: the mobile native

Built by The Browser Company, Arc Search is iPhone-first and feels like the future. The "Browse for me" button visits five sites, synthesises an answer with screenshots and citations, and reads it aloud. It is free, with no Pro tier yet.

Head-to-head results

Citation accuracy

We checked every citation across 100 queries. Perplexity: 96% accurate. You.com: 92%. Arc: 89%. All three occasionally hallucinated a quote that did not appear in the linked source.

Freshness

For breaking news in the past hour, You.com (with custom Twitter/X source) won. Perplexity is best for the past 24 hours. Arc lags slightly on very fresh queries.

Depth

Perplexity's Pro Search routinely produced multi-page reports with 15+ sources for complex queries — closer to a junior analyst than a search engine.

Privacy and source diversity

Perplexity and You.com let you opt out of AI training on your queries. Arc Search does not collect search history at all by default. None of them solve the deeper problem: AI search reduces traffic to the sites that source the answers.

Our 2026 verdict

Power researcher: Perplexity Pro. Customiser who wants control: You.com. iPhone user who wants the cleanest mobile experience: Arc Search (and it is free). We use all three — Arc on phone, Perplexity on desktop, You.com for specific recurring workflows.
